The Exhaustion Series

I began The Exhaustion Series in 2015 still processing having had and survived cancer and chemotherapy years previously. Chemotherapy slowed me down and profoundly altered my sense of Time. Cancer was a teacher that provoked me to reflect on the nuance of beauty, will, and sadness within our struggles to survive and endure. Describing this persistence through Time became my obsession as a young artist, resulting in The Exhaustion Series.

In The Exhaustion Series, I ask loved ones to perform one specific motion repetitively until the point of total exhaustion. The camera runs from their initial movement until they choose to stop.

In Exhaustion I, Anthony Restivo plays one note on a saxophone for 58-minutes.

In Exhaustion II, Jack Doerner treads water for 84-minutes and 22-seconds.

In Exhaustion III, Geoffrey Culbertson smashes rocks for 15-minutes and 23-seconds.

In Exhaustion IV, Maurice Green runs bases for 46-minutes and 10-seconds.

In Exhaustion V, Beth Loughran repeats a dance routine for 35-minutes and 24-seconds.

In Exhaustion VI, David Smith holds a teacup above his head for 30-minutes and 49-seconds.

In Exhaustion VII, Jahleel Gardner, McCoy Williams, & Sandy Williams IV pass the camera around for 161-minutes and 45-seconds.

In Exhaustion VIII, Amanda Burruss types her name on a typewriter for 181-minutes and 27-seconds.
